San Diego Democrats Flex Muscle and Sweep Elections

December 8, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"San Diego County is no longer a Republican stronghold or even a swing county in California. Signaling changing demographics and a shift in the political landscape, the San Diego County Democratic Party raised $1.4 million to elect 70% of their endorsed candidates in November, including winning 16 seats previously held by Republicans."

A Tale of Two Elections – Democrats Terrified and Triumphant

November 17, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"I was announcing victory after victory on the local front. San Diego Democrats swept races, with historic gains countywide. But what could have been a night of sheer joy was instead a bitter sweet tale of two elections: one that plummeted us to terrifying depths of despair nationally, and another of elation that all our hard work paid off in San Diego, and our shared values had come to fruition."

Women's Equality Day: Let's Make It Count

August 18, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"The Republicans want to make America great again by blocking or rescinding the progress that women have made in the past hundred years. In just the past decade, they have tried to pass laws to make access to contraception difficult, overturn Roe v. Wade, deny women equal pay for equal work, deny women equal rights under the Constitution, and suppress the votes of many citizens. Trump personifies the very worst of this retrograde behavior. He has called women 'pigs' and 'slobs' and said women who have abortions should be 'punished.' But this year, I must say, is much bigger than him."

Stronger Together in San Diego

August 4, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"The post Democratic convention bump is likely to lead to to a lasting advantage for Hillary Clinton as we fight our way vote by vote to November.  But in this unusual election season, we can't underestimate the power of Trump's accusations of a “rigged system” with a cynical electorate primed to distrust the system. As this drama unfolds on the national stage, we must also stay focused on the critical races and issues here in San Diego County. And there are a lot of them!"

Republican Values, in Their Own Words

July 21, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"If this were the platform of a fringe Tea Party group or a list of Donald Trump's shoot-from-the-hip policy pronouncements, it would be pathetic. But because it enshrines the core beliefs of one of America's two major political parties, it is disturbing and downright dangerous. Electing Donald Trump, and giving Republicans a majority of legislative seats in statehouses and in Congress, would lead to a hard-right turn and then a full-speed reverse of America's progress."

Record-Setting Momentum Bodes Well for November

July 15, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"Over the past ten years the San Diego County Democratic Party has steadily increased our capacity for turning out voters and winning elections. With over 70,000 newly registered Democrats in the county this year alone, we will be putting all our energy into empowering our volunteers and candidates to engage with voters for a record-setting election turnout in November."

Mara Elliott and Women Trailblazers in San Diego

June 29, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"This is a year to break glass ceilings and make history. Our ballots in San Diego County will include an abundance of women running for office: from Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris to San Diego City Attorney candidate Mara Elliott and many more running for state and local races. Mara Elliott's campaign for City Attorney is a high-priority race for San Diego County Democrats."

We Can Beat Darrell Issa Now!

June 22, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"For years Democrats have asked me about beating Darrell Issa. The Republican congressman now finds himself odds with the voters in his district. The times and tides have changed and Issa might soon be swept out in a tsunami of voter revulsion against Trump and hardline Republicans. He can spend millions of dollars for a campaign, but this time he has met his match in Colonel Doug Applegate and the countless Democrats around the country who would love to see Issa run out of Congress."

United We Stand: The Orlando Effect

June 16, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"More than just hoping for change, we must work for change. We will work to elect legislators who support common sense gun safety legislation. We will stand with victims and their families to say “Enough!” We will stand in unity with people of all colors, nationalities, religions, sexual orientations, genders, and ages for the core values of this country that we love against the fear, prejudice, discrimination, anger, and hate that threaten to divide and weaken us."

A Night to Remember: Primary Election Roundup

June 9, 2016 The Chair's Corner

"There was a lot for Democrats to celebrate on the night of the June 7 primary election. Compared to prior primary elections, in which Democrats were fighting uphill battles on multiple fronts, the successes we experienced signaled our emergence as the dominant political party of San Diego County. On Tuesday, we began to reap more rewards from many years of hard work. And we have reason to look forward to even better results in November.."
